Design For Hands On Education.

Designers worked with instructors to plan an ideal layout for the High Bay Diesel Lab.
The new 65,000 SF facility marries education with bright, state–of-the-art labs designed to enable learning in spaces closely replicating their future work environment.
A feature structure inspired by the industry’s four post lift gives form to the central learning and collaboration pod.
Glass overhead doors lift to reveal a rugged, garage-inspired student lounge.
The High Bay Demonstration Space connects the classroom to a learning lab, enabling instructors to quickly shift from pencils and books to nuts and bolts.

Overview

The new Transportation Center is one of three recent projects executed by Performa at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC). In recent years, the local business economy has created a demand for diesel mechanics, and NWTC responded by launching their Diesel Over The Road Program. As this new program would require a sizeable high-bay workspace, the college saw an opportunity to capitalize on the synergies between this program and the existing Auto Collision and Auto Technology programs which were operating in suboptimal space. Through the design process, new enhanced learning environments were conceived, allowing instructors the freedom and flexibility to quickly transition from traditional classroom learning to demonstrations in connected lab space.

The 65,000 square foot Transportation Center design features flexibility required to host industry events with future program growth and expansion in mind. It features a High-Bay Diesel Lab that maximizes access to daylight and storage and enables communication and collaboration between students and instructors. Common areas are linked to classrooms, one large and two small conference rooms, and a student lounge. The new facility blends the high bay and educational aesthetic and sits proudly along Packerland Drive, acting as a new front door to NWTC.
