Keweenaw Base Camp

Land Use Plan

Houghton, MI

Leveraging The Uniqueness Of The Land

Keweenaw Base Camp builds individuals and groups through intentional Christ-centered service opportunities, wilderness excursions, and extraordinary challenges that inspire faith. The inspiration for the camp came when two friends and supporters of Camp Luther, offered the use of their 220-acre property near Houghton, Michigan.

Performa was engaged by Camp Luther to establish a better understanding of the existing property and the opportunities it possessed in order to be optimally developed. The result is that the camp is organized into activity zones based on physical land features. Individual camps were also strategically positioned between the zones to allow for solitude and to support future growth opportunities.

While the land use configuration took into consideration the extensive service areas needed to maintain a base camp, it also preserved the area’s natural beauty as well as the key vistas surrounding the camp. Keweenaw Base Camp is now a launching point for Camp Luther’s offsite activities and offers incredible outdoor opportunities found only in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
