How can Virtual Reallity (VR) influence design?

Facility planning and design have evolved with clients as the use of virtual reality places them in the center of their design. Virtual buildings, rooms, and environments can be viewed through goggles to enhance the collaboration process with user groups and improve the final project. Transformative tools like Revit, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Cloud and Mobile Apps are transforming the A/E/C workplace.

Through the use of virtual reality, our clients can experience scale, environment, department layouts, finishes, and the feeling of a building’s space before a shovel hits the dirt.

Virtual reality is a realistic and immersive simulation of a three-dimensional environment, created using interactive software and hardware, and experienced or controlled by movement of the body.

Architects have been creating three-dimensional computer models for decades but only recently has Virtual reality technology become detailed enough to give you the feeling of actually being inside the computer model.

Virtual reality enhances and often quickens an individual’s decision-making ability.

We are using virtual reality (VR) because it’s geeky (sort of) and cool (definitely!).

Performa has integrated VR into our design process to heighten the communication between clients and our architects, engineers, and interior designers. This allows you to experience what it will be like within your building prior to it being built.

VR brings a building’s environment to life, in true scale, and places you in a new world. With VR technology you can stand or sit in the model and move from room to room, floor to floor, or outside.

While our designers are hard at work conceptualizing your project, 3D computer models are generated. Those models are transferred to sophisticated visualization software. Once the model is created, we can introduce basic or complex materials and lighting, giving you an accurate sense of the environment and how finishes and lighting work together.

The use of virtual reality in architectural design merges two unrelated fields, gaming, and architecture, and has been a benefit to our clients. It is a way that we can be innovative in the delivery of our services, and better serve our clients by more efficiently communicating design.

Belmark | The use of virtual reality allowed the owner to share and engage leaders in the connection of plants via a skywalk.

St. Norbert College, Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center | A first ever pool for the college required the selection of tile color, lane dividers, flags, and light fixtures. As selections were made, files were updated to reflect each material illustrating a cohesive space, which in turn allowed for prompt decisions and ordering.  Color palates were updated in the gymnasium after the client experienced the scale of a fully painted wall, saving time and money resulting in zero downtime for changes.

Plexus, Neenah Design Center | An experiential environment for customer journey mapping, the use of virtual reality helped shape the space, fixtures, lighting, colors, brand graphics and overall experience.

Skyward | When designers shared an alternative concept with owners, it was not until they experienced the virtual reality view to scale, that clear communication took place and a change could be made. The use of virtual reality on a custom order kept the project on schedule and reduced the cost.
