Performa was engaged to help plan and develop a conceptual design for a top-tier climbing facility. A growing phenomenon, climbing facilities offer a fun alternative to the typical gym culture of workout centers and can offer something unique to climbing enthusiasts and even children and families. Wisconsin is known for its cold winters, so the premise for Expedition Climbing and an “arctic” climbing wall is fitting for the location of this unique project.
The conceptual design of this approximately 20,000 sf space features indoor and outdoor climbing surfaces, including ice and snow, retail space and a restaurant facility. As you enter the facility, you will find a 10-15,000 sf climbing area featuring a 50-ft indoor climbing wall, small guest check-in area, and another 5,000 sf of retail space which includes a small shop to purchase climbing gear, a bar, café and restaurant. Of note is an 80-foot, outdoor ice/snow climbing “artic wall” and a mezzanine-level bouldering wall with seating to view climbers as they’re scaling the walls. Other support elements include a small fitness floor, group exercise rooms, lockers/storage, a small office for staff and the potential for conference/co-working spaces as well as a group party area. Future phases include the possibility of a rooftop bar with views of ice climbers above.
